Tributes have been paid to a Co Roscommon musician who died after he was struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident in the US at the weekend.

Martin O'Connor, 41, from Frenchpark, was a drummer in the band of well-known country singer Declan Nerney and was due to play onboard a cruise ship that was to leave from Port Everglades yesterday.

Mr O'Connor was knocked down while crossing the road in North Lauderdale in the early hours of Saturday.

He had been in the company of a number of other Irish men.

He was taken to the local Broward Health Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.
