Dublin homeless services say they have reduced rough sleeping with a 15% increase in emergency accommodation.

In an update on the Government's action plan the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive says that 271 extra beds have been made available.

The proportion of rough sleepers accessing emergency beds has increased to 84%.

The action plan was drawn up following the death of a homeless man outside Leinster House last December.

Since then the homeless executive has recorded a "marked increase" in the number of members of the public contacting their teams to assist rough sleepers.

It says that members of the public who want to help someone on the street they can contact the Housing First Service confidentially on www.homelessdublin.ie/report-rough-sleeper.

The report also stated that 344 rental households were prevented from falling into homelessness when they contacted the Tenancy Protection Service run by Threshold.

Many qualified for increased rent supplement payments due to increased rents or money problems.

The night cafe has also been open since 21 January catering for up to 50 people nightly who cannot or will not go to emergency accommodation.
