140 people are to lose their jobs as the Bose Corporation facility in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan is set to close in April of this year.

Employees were informed of the decision at 4pm this evening.

The audio systems company has been in Carrickmacross for 37 years.

Chairman of Monaghan County Council Padraig Mc Nally described the news as a devastating blow to area and has called a special meeting of Monaghan County Council tomorrow to discuss the issue.

Following the announcement the president of Carrickmacross Chamber of Commerce called on the Government to find new jobs for the area.

No one from Bose Corporation was available to speak to RTÉ News, but in a statement the company said they had taken the decision to close the Carrickmacross facility as well as a facility in the United States, in order to streamline the company's global supply chain.

The IDA has said it regrets the decision and will now be trying to market the site and the talent pool that exists to potential clients and work with local stake holders.

Minister of State for Business and Employment Ged Nash said he would be following up with State agencies such as the IDA and Enterprise Ireland to pursue other job creation opportunities in the area.

SIPTU is to meet with management at Bose on Monday and said the announcement on the proposed closure of the plant was a "bolt out of the blue" for workers.

SIPTU organiser Jim McVeigh said the majority of the workforce live in Monaghan and the closure would have a significant negative impact on the local economy.
