Tánaiste Joan Burton has said that a five-year tax reform plan will not feature in the Government's spring economic statement.

There were reports that such a plan would be included as part of the April statement.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke, Ms Burton said the Economic Management Council had already agreed the basis of tax reform.

It should target individuals at work on low and middle incomes of between €30,000 and €70,000 a year, she added.

She said she was anxious that any future Government plans are sustainable.

Ms Burton said: "I want to take this one year at a time and I want any plans that the Government make to be actually realisable plans that we intend to implement.

"People rightly criticised the Labour Party for making promises before the General Election which we thought were we in government in majority we could do.

"We weren't able to do them and people said you over promised."
