Gardaí have said that they are not aware of any threat to this country from international terrrorists.

Garda Headquarters said in a statement issued this evening that while the threat level is kept under constant review,  there is no information about a threat to Ireland.

The Garda Commissioner Noírín O'Sullivan is to brief the Minister for Justice on this in advance of this week's Government meeting.

A number of motivations influence individuals to travel to conflict zones, including humanitarian and idealistic.

But the major security concerns relate to the radicalisation influences and the security risks some individuals may pose on returning to their home countries.

Gardaí say they remain alert to the potential threat arising from the significant events in the Middle East.

The latest published Garda assessment is that the direct threat to the Irish State from Islamic extremism is low.
