The Garda Commissioner has promoted 45 officers to the senior ranks of the force.

Seven Chief Superintendents and 38 Superintendents have been appointed to fill vacancies in garda divisions and districts all over the country.

The appointments, based on Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan's recommendations, must be approved by Government before the new officers can take up their positions.

It is the largest single group of garda promotions in more than five years.

However, vacancies remain at deputy and assistant commissioner level, the second and third highest ranks in the force, and may not be filled until the establishment of the new independent Garda Authority.
