The Department of Social Protection has said it told a Dublin pub to remove its logo from a poster advertising discounted alcohol for social welfare recipients.

The pub had earlier used the department's logo as part of its online campaign for what is dubbed "Welfare Wednesday", in which it offers subsidised spirits and beer to welfare recipients.

In a statement tonight, Tánaiste Joan Burton and the Department of Social Protection said they regard this action by the pub as irresponsible.

Fine Gael Senator Catherine Noone also condemned the promotion being run by the pub.

The Dublin West Senator said she was not against social welfare recipients receiving discounts, but she said she is against the promotion of what she called irresponsible drinking and irresponsible prices.

Attempts to contact the bar this evening were unsuccessful.
