Man presumed dead after Co Down fire

An elderly man is feared dead following a fire at a farmhouse in Co Down.

The blaze was spotted early this morning. Emergency services, including three units of the fire brigade, were called to tackle the blaze at the farmhouse on the Ballynafern Road in Annaclone near Rathfriland at 7:30am.

The roof of the farmhouse and much of the interior of the building were destroyed in the fire and the 82-year-old farmer who lived there was unaccounted for and is presumed to have died in the fire.

Local MLA John McCallister, who farms nearby, said the community had been deeply shocked by the tragedy.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
