Canadian police have said a man shot and killed eight people, including two children, before taking his own life.

The incident unfolded in three different locations in Edmonton, in the western province of Alberta.

Seven of those killed - three women, two men and the two children - were found in the same house, Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said.

The eighth victim was a woman.

The homicides took place in Edmonton, a city of nearly one million people in the western province of Alberta.

According to CBC News, seven of those killed were found on Monday night in a north Edmonton home.

A woman's body was found in a separate house in the southwest of the city and yet another corpse was discovered in Fort Saskatchewan.

Edmonton police did not provide immediate details except to say they were "investigating a multiple homicide scene in north Edmonton".

Citing unnamed sources, several Canadian media outlets said the crime scenes were connected.

Investigators said they would provide more information at an afternoon news conference.
