Hundreds of people are braving poor weather conditions in Galway to visit a live crib at the city's cathedral.

The annual event is a fundraiser for local charities.

It's organised by parishioners in the city centre and involves the participation of local families, while farm animals are also brought into the city by farmers in surrounding areas.

School choirs have been providing a musical accompaniment to the proceedings throughout the day.

Volunteers play the roles of the main nativity characters in half hour shifts, with young babies from the area cast as the infant Jesus.

Organisers say the event reminds people of the origins of Christmas and helps raise awareness of good causes in the locality.
