A spokesperson for Beaumont Hospital said that while the hospital is asking patients to avoid visiting its Emergency Department, it is not closed to all admissions.

Where possible, ambulances bound for the ED are being diverted to other hospitals.

Acute emergency situations are being dealt with.

The hospital is experiencing severe overcrowding at the emergency department.

Hospital management has asked GPs not to send patients to the emergency department unless absolutely necessary.

Some non-urgent operations and procedures have also been cancelled or postponed in an effort to ease pressure on the hospital.

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on health Billy Kelleher urged Minister for Health Leo Varadkar to intervene in the crisis that has crippled Beaumont Hospital and continues to deteriorate.

Mr Kelleher said: "From what I've heard Beaumont Hospital doesn't just have a trolley problem any more, it has seriously sick patients waiting in chairs for hours on end."
