Over a quarter of the 260 emergency beds promised to help tackle the homeless crisis will be in place from tomorrow, according to Dublin City Council.

Dublin Civil Defence is due to open its 20-bed emergency facility tomorrow, earlier than previously thought.

The shelter will stay open across the Christmas period and will be run by volunteers from the Civil Defence.

Focus Ireland has welcomed the emergency measures - but says more long-term accommodation needs to be put in place.

This week the Government announced details of a €20m plan of action to tackle emergency and short term homelessness, with 260 emergency beds promised for Dublin.

The plan also includes a night café to provide a contact point for homeless people who do not want to be placed in emergency accommodation.
