The Minister of State at the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources has said that there will be no change to the "current arrangements" regarding the TV licence fee.

Joe McHugh was asked about the status of the introduction of the broadcast charge by the Fianna Fáil TD Michael Moynihan.

Mr McHugh said Minister for Communications Alex White is currently considering amendments to "administrative and operational issues identified in the period since the act came into affect".

When pushed by Mr Moynihan on whether the broadcast charge had been shelved, Mr McHugh said that the Minister for Communications had already said there would be no change at present.

Mr McHugh said it was a complex area, adding that most people now use their iPhones for daily news feeds.

Due to that complexity, he said Mr White needed to take time to "consider the matter".

"If we've learned anything as a Government in the last to six or seven months, it's important to take time and do things in a proper way, rather than rushing it," he said.
