Greek police fired tear gas at protesters hurling molotov cocktails towards them as clashes broke out during a large protest in Athens.
Clashes erupted when protesters began smashing shop and bank windows, and setting rubbish bins on fire.
Some threw rocks and Molotov's at police who responded with tear gas.
The violence broke out during a protest to mark the sixth anniversary of the police killing of 15-year-old teenager, Alexandros Grigoropoulos, which had led to weeks of riots.
Protesters were also marching in support of a 21-year-old jailed anarchist, a friend of Grigoropoulos, who has been on a hunger strike for 25 days demanding he be allowed to attend university classes.
The protests come as austerity measures have already peaked anger in the country, adding to the already tense climate as families deal with unemployment, poverty, and taxes.
Some 8,000 police were deployed to the streets to avert violence.
