Ryanair's Michael O'Leary has said the airline is in "active discussions" with Shannon Airport in relation to operating a regional flight service to the UK.
Ryanair is also in talks about developing new routes from Shannon.
Last week, Stobart Air announced that it was to cease operations from Shannon Airport from 5 January with a loss of up to 20 flights a week.
Stobart Air said that Shannon did not fit the company's current strategic plan.
The airline operated services from Shannon to Bristol, Birmingham and Edinburgh under the Aer Lingus regional brand.
Shannon Airport CEO Neil Pakey today said that the service was used by up to 90,000 passengers a year.
Mr Pakey said that there was considerable pressure on the airport to find an alternative airline to replace Stobart Air.
He added that the regional service from the UK was important for Shannon as it brings additional passengers who are connecting with transatlantic flights.
