The Connacht Tribune media group in Galway is ceasing publication of the weekly Connacht Sentinel title, with today’s edition the last.

The newspaper has been published since 1925, when it was established as a sister title to The Connacht Tribune by founding editor Tom 'Cork' Kenny.

In its early years, the paper provided an outlet for the work of author Pádraic Ó'Conaire, printing several of his short stories.

It has been a regular fixture in many Galway households, with a reputation for extensive sports coverage and a mix of news and features each Tuesday.

An editorial in today's edition told readers that while this week marks the end of an era, all the main elements of the newspaper will be housed in the Galway City Tribune from next week.

The newspaper thanked readers for their trust and loyalty over the last 89 years and said its "proud tradition" will be continued.

The editorial said that while the departure of the Sentinel will be mourned by many, it is not the end of the road for the columns and content, which made it "part of the fabric of Galway" for almost nine decades.
