Thursday is the most likely day of the week for workplace accidents, men are more likely to have a workplace accident than women and slips, trips and falls are the most common accident type.

That is according to figures released today by the Injuries Board.

Last year, €24m in compensation was awarded as result of workplace accidents for a total of 826 claims.

That is up €2m on the previous year, while the number of workplace incidents is up by 19.

Injuries Board Chief Executive Patricia Byron, said the workplace can be a more hazardous place for tired staff as the week goes.

She said: "We are of the view from looking at the files that people get a little bit more fatigued as the week goes on.

"There are more people at work and also that people tend to work longer hours as the week goes on.

"Probably on a Thursday people are endeavouring to meet targets by the end of the week."
