A field in north county Dublin is being preserved overnight following the discovery of a skull in a ditch.

The discovery was made at around 4pm by workmen operating a JCB involved in ground clearance.

The State Pathologist is expected to visit the area tomorrow to carry out a preliminary examination to determine whether the skull is that of a human and if it is historic or more recent.

The skull was found in a large field beside the Waterside Estate and Bennettstown Ravensdale farm off the Swords road.
