Members of the Irish Post Office Users' Association staged a sit-in at Ballinasloe post office this morning.

The protest was in response to the closure or threat of closure to rural post offices in Galway, most recently Cappataggle Post Office.

The group says that ten post offices in Galway have been downgraded or closed in the past few years.

Michael Kilgannon, chairperson of the group, said he was asked to leave by management of the post office and that gardaí then arrived.

However, protesters did not leave and the sit-in continued until 1pm.

Demonstrators said they did not intend to disrupt business at the post office.
