The former secretarial assistant to Fine Gael TD Sean Conlan has claimed she was bullied and harassed by the TD and another person in his office.

The Cavan-Monaghan Deputy denies the claims made by Cathy Shevlin, which were heard today during an unfair dismissal case at the Employment Appeals Tribunal.

Mr Conlan said that Ms Shevlin undermined him as a TD and claimed she divulged confidential information to people who would not be politically sympathetic to him.

This is contested by Ms Shevlin.

The former secretary worked for Mr Conlan from June 2011 until he dismissed her in March 2013 over what he said were breaches of her contract.

These included claims that she passed on tally information to other members of the Fine Gael party locally.

Mr Conlan stated he was told this by his Parliamentary Assistant Sarah Commiskey.

The Tribunal also heard that Ms Shevlin claimed that Sarah Commiskey had shouted at her on one occasion.

On another occasion Mr Conlan said in evidence that Cathy Shevlin had answered Sarah Commiskey's phone and not told her about the call in question.

According to Mr Conlan that Ms Shevlin claimed on Facebook that he had not attended a local party branch meeting and this undermined him as an elected representative.

Ms Shevlin was on sick leave from 28 September 2012 until her dismissal in 2013.

This followed a meeting that day with Mr Conlan after which her barrister Tom Mallon said she was reduced to tears.

Ms Shevlin denied the TD's claims that he gave her two oral warnings before she was dismissed. The case is set to resume on 4 December next.
