A New York City hospital is running Ebola tests on a doctor who returned to the US from West Africa with a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the city's health department.

In addition, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene also said that preliminary test results were expected in the next 12 hours.

The patient being treated at Bellevue Hospital is reported to be a healthcare worker who returned to the US within the past 21 days from one of the three African countries facing the Ebola outbreak.

The patient had a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms and was being tested because of their "recent travel history, pattern of symptoms and past work," the department said.

Bellevue is one of three hospitals in Manhattan and eight in the state of New York equipped to handle patients diagnosed with Ebola.

Meanwhile, President of Sierra Leone Ernest Bai Koroma has stated that the Ebola virus will be contained in his country by the end of the year.

Speaking to ITV News Mr Bai Koroma said: "I am of the view that by the end of the year, we'll be in a position of not eliminating but containing the Ebola virus".

He also defended his government's handling of the crisis: "The Ebola outbreak was announced in May and it was new to all of us. We are not alone in the fight.

"We also had the WHO who principally advised us on what to do and every step of the way we have had consultations with them and I believe we have been reacting appropriately."

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has described the spreading outbreak, which has claimed 4,900 lives including at least 1,200 in Sierra Leone, as a global public health emergency.

Sierra Leone is one of the countries worst affected by the epidemic, along with its west African neighbours Guinea and Liberia.
