The Ulster Unionist Party leader has raised the suggestion of an electoral pact with the DUP for two Northern Ireland constituencies in next year's Westminster elections.

The proposal by Mike Nesbitt at his party conference would target Sinn Féin.

Two years ago the Ulster Unionist leader, Mike Nesbitt, was against electoral pacts.

At his party's annual conference in Belfast this afternoon, his stance changed.

He suggested making a pact with the DUP in two Northern Ireland constituencies during next year's Westminster elections.

In North Belfast, the sitting DUP candidate Nigel Dodds will come under pressure from Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly.

In Fermanagh South Tyrone, Sinn Féin's Michele Gildernew is the sitting MP.

Westminster elections are run on a first past the post basis.

The UUP offer to the DUP is "we will leave you a free run in North Belfast if you return the favour in Fermanagh South Tyrone."

It is likely the DUP will give serious consideration to the proposal.

In the 2010 Westminster elections the Ulster Unionists failed to win a seat in the 18 Northern Ireland constituencies.
