Motorists are being urged to drive with care over the weekend after Met Éireann issued two severe weather warnings.

A status yellow wind warning is in place for the entire country, with strong southerly winds forecast to gust over 85km per hour today.

There is also a status yellow rainfall warning in place until tomorrow night for southern and western coastal counties.

Gerry Murphy of Met Éireann says the rainfall will be significant: "In general there'll be plenty of heavy showers throughout the day with the risk of thunder.

“With those showers feeding in from the west there'll be potential for significant amounts of rainfall in western and coastal counties as we go through today, tonight and tomorrow.

“Our warning is for between 30 and 50 millimetres of rainfall over the weekend but the possibility of up to 60 in some mountainous areas in the west," he said.
