Tánaiste Joan Burton has said no water supply will be cut off if people do not pay their water charges.

Ms Burton was responding to Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald, who accused the Government of threatening people by cutting off their water.

The Tánaiste said such a claim was "a big Sinn Féin lie", adding that "the law in Ireland does not allow" water to be cut off.

Ms McDonald accused Ms Burton of threatening and haranguing people and failing to answer questions in the Dáil.

She finished her contribution to Ms Burton saying: "Shame on you."

People Before Profit Alliance TD Joan Collins called on the Tánaiste "to consider intervening to defend the right to peaceful protest" in relation to Irish Water.

The Dublin TD was referring to protests against the installation of water meters.

Ms Collins said that contrary to the view of the Taoiseach - that protests were being taken by the usual suspects - they were taking place "spontaneously".

She accused gardaí of breaking protests up in an aggressive manner.

Ms Collins questioned the level of garda resources being put into managing the protests.

Ms Burton said she noted that "all the protesters have expensive phones, tablets and video cameras".

Despite heckling from the Opposition, the Tánaiste continued: "I say this seriously, a core part of the campaign is to video every single second.

"There has been the most extensive filming in relation to these actions. Hollywood would be in the ha'penny place."

She put it to Ms Collins that "with all the filming going on", she did not think gardaí were behaving improperly.

Meanwhile, 35,000 people have signed a petition created by the Right2Water campaign group that asks the Government to abolish domestic water charges.

The Right2Water group is also organising a protest in Dublin on Saturday 11 October beginning from the Garden of Remembrance at 2pm to protest the charge.
