Almost 1,700 results from this year's Leaving Certificate have been upgraded on appeal, according to the State Examinations Commission.
A total of 5,447 candidates appealed results this year, challenging 9,267 grades.
While 1,673 marks were improved on appeal, three were downgraded.
In the processing of appeals, the work of each candidate is fully re-marked question by question.
The re-marking is performed by a different examiner to the one who originally marked the work.
Higher Level English saw the largest number of appeals, with 1,596 candidates lodging an appeal. The SEC said 200 of those had been upgraded.
