The family of a British man being held by Islamic jihadists has issued a statement pleading again for his release.

The Henning family says it has received an audio file of Alan Henning "pleading for his life".

No further details of the message were divulged in the statement, which was issued on behalf of the family by the British Foreign Office.

Mr Henning's wife, Barbara, said she has been told that her husband "has been to a Sharia Court and found innocent of being a spy and declared to be no threat".

She implored the group that calls itself the Islamic State to "abide by the decisions of their own justice system".

Mrs Henning said the family is "at a loss why those leading [the] Islamic State [group] cannot open their hearts and minds to the facts surrounding Alan's imprisonment and why they continue to threaten his life".

The 47-year-old taxi driver from Manchester was delivering aid to Syria when he was kidnapped last December.

His wife made an appeal on Sunday to his captors calling for Mr Henning's release, saying he is a "peaceful, selfless man".
