The Standards in Public Office Commission has issued an apology to former Labour Party MEP Emer Costello.

SIPO incorrectly claimed she had spent more money in this year's European Parliament election campaign than any other candidate in the Dublin constituency.

It said today that the highest spender had been the Fianna Fáil candidate, Mary Fitzpatrick, who spent €218, 545 during the campaign, compared to €202,034 by Ms Costello.

In a statement this afternoon, SIPO said the report to the Ceann Comhairle on the European Parliament Election omitted to record a donation of €1,000 received by Ms Costello from SIPTU.

The statement clarifies the error saying: "The total for donations received recorded on the press release referred to above was accordingly inaccurate.

"The Standards Commission has apologised to Ms Emer Costello in this regard."
