Two hillwalkers have been rescued from the Galtee Mountains in Co Tipperary.

The two had become stranded after encountering bad weather and dense fog at about 9pm yesterday evening.

They had been out walking since 9am, but were not able to contact anyone when they got into difficulty as the batteries in their phones had died.

They were located by a search party at around 3am this morning.

It is the second time that mountain rescue had to search for people lost on the mountain in seven days.

Inexperienced hillwalkers are being warned to avoid mountaineering in the evening time as visibility deteriorates with the onset of autumn.

South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association urged hillwalkers not to "bite off more than they can chew" and to avoid climbing in the evening if they are not skilled in navigation.

The association's Deputy PRO Jimmy Barry said hillwalkers need to recognise the extent of their abilities.

"It's a case of people going out there and thinking they can get away with it if the weather is fine during the day.

"But all of a sudden the evening comes down; and if you are not skilled in navigation and that; and if you are not with people that know how to navigate - please don't go up there.

"Getting lost like that - you can get into serious, serious difficulty."
