Irish language organisation Comhdháil Náisiunta na Gaeilge has ceased to exist following the withdrawal of Government funding.

The decision was taken by the board of the 70-year-old organisation in Dublin last night.

It was put on the record at the meeting that the board felt there was no other option but to dissolve with immediate effect because of a decision by Foras na Gaeilge to cease its funding.

All six staff at Comhdháil Náisiunta na Gaeilge have been laid off.

The organisation was founded in 1943.
