The first day of competitive action at the Special Olympics Ireland Games 2014 has kicked off in Limerick.

Some 1,500 athletes from all around the country are participating in 14 different sports.

The University of Limerick arena is hosting many of the events, including aquatics, athletics and basketball.

Ennis, Ballykisteen, Clonshire and Murroe are also hosting sports, including bowling and golf.

The finals will take place later today and tomorrow with medal ceremonies following.

The games finish on Sunday.

A team of around 100 Athletes will then be chosen to represent Team Ireland at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2015.
