Opponents of Eirgrid's planned €80m pylon project are meeting in County Laois tonight; to decide whether to take court action against An Bord Pleanála.

The project, which has been given the green light, includes new substations in Kilkenny and Laois and a 26 kilometre connecting line.

However, local residents said they are totally shocked by the approval given to the project and will fight it to the end.

Campaigners believe the planned substation at Coolnabacky Co Laois is too large and they fear the area will become a major electrical hub.

Ratheniska, Timahoe and Spink Substation Action Group spokesman, Colm Fingleton, said "we are all kind of stunned with the decision.

"I think it is an outrage, it's like they never heard our concerns," he said.
