A baby gorilla made an unusual arrival into the world today, when it was delivered by Caesarean section at a zoo in the United States.

An 18-year-old adult gorilla underwent the rare animal procedure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Imani was a pregnant gorilla in need of urgent assistance as her labour was not progressing.

A team of human and veterinary surgeons decided to operate in order to deliver her infant.

The baby girl was born weighing 2kg (four pounds, six ounces) and is being treated in intensive care after her dramatic arrival.

However, doctors say overall she is doing well.

The baby is the 17th gorilla to be born at the park.

It is currently home to a troop of seven gorillas, who will now be joined by the new arrival.
