The HSE has confirmed that a perinatal death took place at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise on 8 March.
According to a spokesperson an incident management policy is being followed.
The coroner has requested that a post-mortem examination take place and this is now in progress.
The HSE has offered its condolences to the family.
The hospital was the subject of a recent investigation following the death of four babies.
