Irish troops involved in the UN peace keeping mission on the Golan Heights came under fire this morning, the Defence Forces have confirmed.

No one was injured by the attack although one soldier was slightly hurt taking cover in his vehicle.

The incident took place at around 9.50am (local time), when the patrol of five Irish  armoured vehicles with 36 troops of the 43rd infantry group came under small arms fire about 20km from camp Faour.

They took cover and returned fire from their vehicles before withdrawing from the area.

A Defence Forces spokesman said it is believed the attack came from anti government armed elements.
