Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis has resigned over the collapse of a supermarket roof last week, which killed 54 people.
Mr Dombrovskis told journalists that he was resigning and "taking political responsibility for the tragedy".
The government had come under criticism after the disaster in the capital Riga, which was the country's worst since independence in the early 1990s.
As well those who died, dozens were injured when the roof of the Maxima store collapsed last Thursday.
Mr Dombrovskis had previously said the collapse had shattered the country, while Latvian President Andris Berzins had called the disaster "murder".
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, although police have opened a criminal investigation focusing on the construction of the building.
Local media said workers had been building a roof garden on the supermarket, a single-storey building a 30-minute drive from the city centre.
The resignation throws Latvia into political turmoil, as the Baltic state is due to join the eurozone in January.
