The Druid Theatre Company has named its auditorium in Galway after co-founder Mick Lally.

The actor, renowned for his performances on stage and screen, died in 2010.

The sole theatre in the company's Druid Lane building is now be known as The Mick Lally Theatre.

After completing his studies at NUI, Galway in 1975, Lally set up Druid with Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen.

Tonight Ms Hynes said he was - and always would be - at the centre of everything Druid did.

She said naming a theatre after him was a fitting remembrance of his contribution to building and developing the company.

Lally's family are among those attending a special function at Druid Lane tonight.

Druid is also announcing an emerging artists scheme, to help young drama companies in the west of Ireland.

They will be invited to submit proposals in the coming months, with the winners getting use of Druid facilities for rehearsals and performances in 2014.
