MEPs meeting in Strasbourg have endorsed a plan for binding legislation to be introduced that would increase the share of women on company boards.

The position of the Parliament broadly matches that of Germany, which wants the EU to legislate on the matter.

Under the MEP plan, companies will have to adjust their recruitment, selection and appointment procedures to increase female representation on their boards to at least 40%.

Failure to do so would lead to sanctions.
