A Luas driver who left the wheel of his tram to save a woman from drowning is among the 36 people being commended at Irish Water Safety's National Awards Ceremony this afternoon.

Philip Redmond was on duty on the Luas Red Line on 19 June when a passenger notified him that a woman was in distress in the canal close to the Goldenbridge stop.

Mr Redmond, who is a trained lifeguard, notified the Luas control room, which then alerted the emergency services.

He used a bar from his cab, used to change track points, to bring the woman to safety.

This afternoon's awards ceremony will see 36 rescuers from 22 different incidents receive recognition for their bravery.

Last year there were 147 drownings in Ireland, including 12 deaths over a two-week period during the summer.
