Former patients of Dr Michael Neary who were excluded from the original Lourdes Hospital Redress Scheme because they were over 40, are being invited to submit applications to be considered under a new scheme.

Around 35 women over 40 underwent medically unwarranted procedures by Dr Neary to remove one or both ovaries, or were subjected to unnecessary hysterectomies.

An advertisement has been placed in today's newspapers giving details of the new scheme.

Patient Advocacy group - Patient Focus has welcomed the decision to expand the redress scheme.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Coordinator of Patient Focus Shelia O'Connor said: "They were young women at 40, 42 and they were immediately catapulted into the menopause.

"It's been a huge grief. Some of them have no children and it's just been dreadful and it was sort of compounded by their exclusion from the original scheme."
