President Michael D Higgins has begun his official visit to Mexico with a wreath laying ceremony honouring Irish men who fought in the Mexican war.
Scores of Irishmen changed sides in the 1846 war between Mexico and the US deserting the American Army for Mexican forces.
Many of them were subsequently hanged by the victorious American forces.
Every year their memory is honoured in Mexico City and this year the President was on hand to commemorate their sacrifice.
In his three day trip President Higgins will also visit El Salvador and Costa Rica.
Tomorrow, he will hold talks with President Enrique Pena Nieto and meet members of the Irish community.
