The owners of a circus that is performing in Finglas in Dublin are in a bit of hump about rumours that two of their camels had deserted them earlier today.

John Conway of the Royal Russian Circus told RTÉ News that 12-year-old Kalif and nine-year-old Sully had not escaped as had been widely reported on social media.

He said the pair of male bactrian camels were grazing in a field near the Charlestown Shopping Centre when the animals wandered onto a hump of grass that was visible from the road.

Passing motorists snapped pictures of them on their mobile phones, resulting in rumours that they had wandered onto St Margaret's Road.

The Garda Press Office confirmed that it had observed the camels on traffic cameras in a field near the M50 in Finglas for a short time earlier today.

But it said they never went onto the road or caused traffic disruption and gardaí have taken no action.
