Next week's one-day strike by non-consultant hospital doctors has been deferred for a week to allow the Irish Medical Organisation to consider proposals presented by the Health Service Executive.
The planned strike was in protest at the hours worked by the doctors.
Some work single shifts of over 24 hours, and in excess of 100 hours a week.
This is in breach of European legislation.
The deferral was agreed shortly before 9pm following lengthy talks at the Labour Relations Commission between the IMO and the HSE.
A HSE spokesman said that the executive provided a comprehensive paper that sets out in detail the process for dealing with the issues at hand.
He said the HSE welcomed the deferral of the strike.
It is understood the IMO will consider the proposals over the coming days to make a decision as to whether they form the basis for an overall resolution of the dispute.
