A project is under way in Wexford town to reduce and possibly get rid of one and two cent coins in circulation.
The trial involves around 250 local businesses over the next month.
The aim is to find out how such a move would work in practice and if it could be done all over the country.
The Central Bank, which is organising the trial, said the rules are simple and fair to all.
Cash transactions will be rounded to the nearest five cent at the till, which will remove the need for one and two cent coins in change.
Non-cash transactions will not be affected.
The Central Bank will do market research with consumers and retailers during and after the month to assess the impact of the trial.
