A new ferry service is being piloted from Ballyvaughan in Co Clare to Galway city.

The aim of the Ballyvaughan Bay Hop service is to provide an alternative travel option to commuters and tourists between the two counties.

The journey across Galway Bay reduces the hour-long road journey to 30 minutes by sea.

A return journey costs €20 and a ten-journey ticket costs €80.

This morning a number of commuters and tourists availed of the service.

If the trial is a success, it is hoped that a ferry company would establish a full-time service.
