Eight police officers were injured during attacks by nationalist crowds at a bonfire site in west Belfast.

Crowds threw paint bombs, bottles, and masonry at the PSNI at the anti-internment bonfire in the Divis area of the city.

Two police officers required hospital treatment for head injuries.

Eight people were arrested and a number of streets were closed for several hours.

Meanwhile, in north Belfast during continued disorder police were attacked by a man armed with a sword. Police discharged two baton rounds in response to the attack in the New Lodge area.

Police are investigating the disorder and trying to identify those involved.

Bonfires have traditionally been lit in Catholic communities on 9 August since 1972 to commemorate internment without trial in Northern Ireland.
