The body that oversees the processing of student grants has further extended the deadline for applications for the forthcoming academic year until midnight on Monday.
Student Universal Support Ireland, better known as SUSI, took the decision after its online system crashed ahead of last night's original midnight deadline.
The Department of Education said a "technical glitch" caused the system to crash. It remained out of action for two hours.
The department said around 150 to 200 students were on the system at the time.
SUSI experienced protracted problems during its first year of operation, with delayed grant payments leaving some college goers facing financial hardship.
It said its grant application system was stable this morning, adding that no student data was lost arising from last night's problems.
Almost 15,000 online applications were received by SUSI this week in advance of last night's deadline.
