Taiwanese MPs have exchanged punches and thrown water at each other before a vote approving a referendum on whether to go ahead with a fourth power plant.

The fight involved politicians from President Ma Ying-jeou's Nationalist Party and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, which is strongly opposed to the bill.

The Nationalist party has a large majority so the bill is expected to pass.

The DPP opposes nuclear power generation in Taiwan on safety grounds because the island is prone to earthquakes.
