Syrian troops are reported to have driven insurgents from central Homs, tightening their siege on remaining rebel outposts in the city.

The military's gains in the city follow a counter-offensive by President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Government troops have pushed back rebels around the Syrian capital.

They have retaken several towns and villages near the border with Lebanon in the last few weeks.

An army spokesman said they had taken control of Khalidiya in  collaboration with the National Defence Force, referring to the NDF militia which has fought in the offensive along with Lebanese Hezbollah fighters.

Some activists have disputed the capture of Khalidiya district.

They said heavy clashes continue, they have conceded that army had control of almost the entire neighbourhood.

The army's progress in Khalidiya comes a month after it launched an offensive in Homs.

It is building on its capture of the border towns of Qusair and Tel Kalakh.

The two towns were both used to bring rebel arms and fighters into Syria from Lebanon.

At least 100,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict.
