The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Social Policy has agreed in principle that it would be good to ban alcohol sponsorship of sport.

However, it has also agreed that no such ban can be put in place until a way to provide alternative funding for sporting organisations is agreed.

At a meeting last Monday, the sub-committee agreed that there should be further analysis of alternative sources of funding before a sunset date for alcohol sponsorship can be agreed.

It also agreed to further analysis of the impact of below-cost selling, particularly the potential economic impact and the cross-border context.

It will also look at further restrictions on alcohol advertising.

The Cabinet will discuss these issues in the autumn
