Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte will bring proposals to Cabinet for the establishment of a new company to manage Ireland's gas network.

The move will facilitate the planned sale of Bord Gáis Energy.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr Rabbitte said the sale of the energy division of Bord Gáis could facilitate the injection of funding into rural broadband as well as the rollout of Irish Water, the new public water utility.

He said the Troika would want to see how Ireland was spending the proceeds of the Bord Gáis Energy sale.

He declined to confirm whether there were three interested bidders in the chase to acquire BGE, as reported at the weekend.
